EXHIBIT AT ITALIA: RE-CREATION by Michael Cacnio

In the midst of trial, Cacnio creates anew.

Despite the troubles of life, Michael Cacnio has consistently depicted social reality in a positive light. The same is ever true with the present. In the past year and a half, the home has become both shelter and refuge from the outside, and yet there is that sense of being trapped within the four walls with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

Yet Cacnio’s RE-CREATION is the human spirit victoriously freeing himself in this scenario. During this season of hiding and taking shelter, man finds himself more. The joys of making anew are akin to taking flight: A man finds his inner artist and paints on the final touches of a vivid portrait, a father gives his son a haircut for the first time, a young girl is caught in a graceful dance. In such art that is both warmly familiar and new, Michael Cacnio brings dreams to life, dreams that were once unknown. They reveal the elation in simple yet pivotal joys and call to us to keep the wonder alive in the midst of our present realities. Such are the joys of the hidden talents we’ve discovered these past eighteen months.

The artist renders idyllic visions of Filipino life, such as hat-wearing characters being whisked away by balloons. The men, women, and children in his world of whimsy are made in his brass sculptor’s craft, set in or atop wood. An artist examines his welded brass, deep in thought. Trees become sources of refuge and fun for those who seek them. Michael Cacnio uniquely and consistently captures the triumph of the human spirit in these moments where man recreates and finds his freedom yet again.
