The invitation to Negros excited her. Having had the chance to visit the land in the past, visions of green, fertile lands engulfed her; affluence, as if about to burst with produce and positive energy, the lure of a Negros visit enchanted the famous, multi awarded Lydia Velasco.
Féconde adj: Fr. fertile; affluent
Lydia Velasco was born on the 27th of December 1942 in the town of Navotas, Philippines. Velasco’s love for the arts is an innate calling she traces back to her childhood. She pursued Fine Arts major in advertising at University of Santo Tomas and then worked for many years as an artist for an advertising agency wherein her art directors turned out to be H.R. Ocampo and Cesar Legazpi, who are both national artists now.
“Her subjects are mainly women. She liberates them on her canvases and asserts their glory, identity, and freedom amid a mainly patriarchal society. She describes her depictions of women as elongated, massive, heavily set, invigorated with almost masculine assertiveness. Velasco’s women are graceful yet hardworking, sensual, strong and independent showing all the facets of the artist’s inner self”
Velasco is a core member of the Saturday Group of artists and the president of Kulay Marikina Group of Artist. Her works have been auctioned by international auction houses as Sotheby’s, Borobudur, Larasati and Masterpiece. Aside from Singapore and Hong Kong, her works have found themselves with collectors in Japan, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S.
Lydia Velasco is regarded as one of the top women artists in the Philippines
