Simultaneous to his winning several awards during the 1970’s, Rafael Paderna dedicated his early years as an artist in teaching. Paeng became one of the pioneers of art in Bacolod and led, taught and inspired several of our known Bacolod artists, thereby making him one of the most respected artists in Bacolod. He was president of the Art Association of Bacolod for several terms and years.

Paeng was also recognized as Outstanding Alumnus by University of Sto. Tomas. He is also known for his Sculptures.  In the Art Association of the Philippines national competition in 1981, he grabbed the gold medal for his sculpture, the Birdman.

Paeng moved to the United States in the 1980’s where he carried on his art as a hobby. Be it as it may, his skills shone through thereby winning him several awards in 1994, 2001, 2005 and 2006 as recognized by the Anaheim Art Association USA.

Today, Paeng is back home in Bacolod, and thankfully for the Bacolod art patrons, his art creation is back full time. On the dove, which is a frequent part of his work, he says “I want my paintings to impart hope, which is why that dove is there. In today’s times, we are always uncertain but we should be reminded that there is always hope, as the human spirit is strong, and faith stronger.”

Paeng is known for his family centered theme and the gentleness in his characters. Most of his pieces depict love and strength in family. However, in this new series, aside from his long-established style, he has boldly stepped into a different realm, wherein one can see freedom of stroke. It seems as if his labored, restrained style has been replaced by a freer, more uncontrolled and liberated caress of canvas.
