Charlie’s Art Gallery presents “Exceptional Sanso,” a collection of extraordinary works by the Presidential Medal of Merit awardee Juvenal Sanso, to be made available in celebration of his 90th birthday. “Exceptional Sanso” pays homage to the master by presenting a world class collection of landscapes and flower works from the 1960s to the 1980s, considered to be the prime of his career. With over seventy years in his artistic career, Juvenal Sanso is one of the most recognized and decorated Philippine artists. Born in 1929, his family migrated to Manila in 1932 to escape the rise of fascism in Europe. He studied Art at the University of the Philippines after the war, and won two grand prizes in the Art Association of the Philippines Art Competition in 1951, prompting him to refine his craft in Italy and then Paris, where he found Expressionism better suited his works, which were largely informed by his trauma from World War II. A pioneering printmaker, his works have been exhibited in various galleries in France, Spain, the UK, the USA, Mexico, and various cities in the Philippines. His work is collected by museums like the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Philadelphia Art Museum, Musee d’ Art Moderne Paris, Museo del Arte Contemporeneo Madrid, and the leading art museums of the Philippines.

For Sanso, art is the extraordinary expression of humanity by an exceptional person. “Exceptional Sanso” gives a glimpse of the person behind the art, who overcame the tragedies of war through finding tranquility and peace in painting. By presenting works from the Black Period to what the late art historian Dr. Reuben Canete called the Poetic Surrealism period, “Exceptional Sanso” enables the public to see the transformation of two important motifs which the artist used continuously over seventy years. The curated collection is the product of careful sourcing by the gallery over the span of a few years, and each work is authenticated with the new Certificate of Authenticity by Fundacion Sanso, with security features which deter forgeries.

With the prices of his works soaring, and the supply dwindling, “Exceptional Sanso” is a rare chance that every Sanso collector must take. “Exceptional Sanso” opens at Charlie’s Art Gallery, Italia Restaurant on December 14, 2019.
